"Dix" was born in Chicago and raised on a farm near Montrose, CO. He received a BS in Aeronautics from MIT and then joined the US Navy, completing flight training in 1942. He took part in numerous campaigns as a fighter pilot in the Pacific (Guadalcanal [where he was severely wounded], the Aleutians, Marshal Islands, Carolines-Truk). He joined his cousin "Bud" Loesch while flying in Fighting-6 under command of Lt. Cmdr. Edward H. "Butch" O'Hare.

He has been credited with being the first pilot to score kills in both the F4F "Wildcat" and the F6F "Hellcat" and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and the Air Medal.

He met and married Marjorie "Peggy" Walker Hilen in 1944.
He was hired by Boeing as a test pilot of the B-47 and B-52 Flight Test Programs and was the co-pilot of the Dash-80 (707) when the plane made its one and only purposeful barrel-roll with "Tex" Johnson as pilot. He later became the Chief of Flight Test during the development and first flights of the 727, 737 and 747. Before retiring, he received the prestigious Elmer Sperry Award for the advancement of aviation transportation.
In his later years, he published a small book on his experiences during the Aleutian Campaign titled "Low Ceiling-Pilots Diary by R.L. (Dix) Loesch [Vantage Press, Inc.]
He is survived by his wife Marjorie, sons James and Andrew, and brothers Buchanan and Franklin.
