WALTER DAVID CROCKETT Known as Dave Crockett to his many friends and to thousands of students and their families who came under his guidance as teacher and principal in the SMSC School District, Dave died Sunday, July 7 at Seqoia Hospital at the age of 88. Dave was born October 13, 1913 at Big Sandy, Tennessee. Prior to graduating as a pilot from the Pensacola Florida Flight School in 1940, designated Naval Aviator #6931, he received his bachelors degree from Murray State Teachers College and taught several years. After Pensacola he was assigned to the battleship, COLORADO, as a scout plain pilot during World War II. He was later assigned to the escort carrier KALININ BAY and a piloted Grumman Avenger Torpedo Bomber. He retired from the navy as a COMMANDER in 1955. He then received his Masters in administration from San Francisco State and came to San Mateo as a teacher at Abbott School from 1954-1957. From 1957-1971, when he retired, he served as principal at Parkside, Highlands and Fiesta Garden Schools. Dave was an ardent bridge player and an enthusiastic supporter of the San Francisco 49ers. He is survived by son, Michael David Crockett and Michael's friend, Rosalie V. Dirmeyer. In accordance with Dave's wishes there will be no service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Classroom Music Program of the SMSC School District, P.O. Box C San Mateo, CA 94402 or to the Peninsula Humane Society.
