Lieutenant Sater was a graduate of West Point, class of 1894. He was killed when leading his troops against the fortifications on San Juan Hill.

The news of his death reached Chanute Kansas on July 4, 1898, and the flags which were floating the town over in honor of the victory won by American arms, sank to half mast as a token of mourning for the lost.
