Richard Carter died of a fever brought on by hunger and weakness while on the Mormon Battalion march. He was buried by his comrades, 4 miles south of Socorro, in Socorro County, New Mexico, just west of the Rio Grande River. A monument stands at Union Cemetery, Sandy Utah commemorating all those that died on the march.
