Rock Musician. A guitarist and vocalist, he was a founding member of the music group The Box Tops. Born William Alexander Chilton, the Memphis native along with Bill Cunningham, Gary Talley, Danny Smythe and John Evans formed the Pop-Rock group; while under the Mala record label, they rose to stardom with the chart-topping hit "The Letter" (August 1967), which featured Chilton (at the age of sixteen) as lead singer. During the next two years, they scored six more top-40 hits including "Neon Rainbow" (which peaked at number 24 in December 1967), and "Cry Like A Baby" reaching number 2 along with gold record status in March 1968. After the group disbanded in 1970, Chilton joined the band Big Star and released three albums while with them throughout the decade. In addition, he recorded several solo albums and remained an active performed participating in Big Star and Box Tops reunions until his death from a heart attack. (bio by: C.S.)
