Curtis Mayfield

Rhythm & Blues Singer. Born in Chicago, Illinois. He was lead vocalist for the soulful rhythm and blues group The Impressions. 'Gypsy Woman" "Its All Right" and "Amen" are just a few of their hits. He left The Impressions in 1970 to pursue a solo career; at the peak of his solo career, he composed the soundtrack to Superfly, a film that won him a gold record and for which he is widely known. In 1990 he was performing at an outdoors concert in New York when a piece of the lighting equipment fell on him leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, in 1991 with The Impressions and in 1999 as a solo artist. 1995 he was a recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; 2003 he was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. (bio by: Babe)
