Francis W. Hicks, longtime wheat farmer and community leader, went to be with the Lord Friday, Dec. 6, 2002. He was born Sept. 12, 1919, to Henry and Eva (Love) Hicks.
Francis grew up in Mansfield, graduating from Mansfield High School in 1936 as Valedictorian.
He started farming in 1940 and in 1944 married the love of his life, Helen Caldwell. Francis was well-known in the wheat community for working with the Douglas County and Washington Wheat Growers Association. He was very active in the Mansfield, Pamona and Washington State Granges, and also was active as a 4-H leader for over 25 years. He served on the Okanogan-Douglas Hospital Board for 35 years, with a number of years as Board Chairman. He was also a retired member of the Mansfield Volunteer Fire Department, and a 50-year member of the Badger Mountain Lodge #57 Free and Accepted Masons.
He loved hunting and fishing, and taught many of Mansfield's hunters firearm safety. He had many stories to tell of his hunting and fishing trips, many of which included family members, his father-in-law, his sons and grandsons.
He was very active in church activities, and was a longtime member of the Little Stone Church in Chelan. Through the years, he taught Sunday School and served as Sunday School Superintendent.
He is survived by his wife Helen; son Timothy of Henderson, NV, daughter Pamela and husband David Bartley of Auburn; daughter Dana and husband Darin Munden of Cambridge, ID; daughter Rylla and husband Brian Riverman of Portland, OR; son Brian and wife Shannon of Pateros. He will be missed greatly by his grandchildren Jeremy Smart and fiancée Tracy and daughter Marylla; Janis and Keith Creameans and children Kyleigh and Kamryn; Jennifer Smart and son KeSean, Trent and Ann Munden, Chandra Munden, and Joshua and Emily Hicks. He is also survived by a sister, Cora Nordby of Mansfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Henry.
Friends who wish to make memorials may make them to the Mansfield Ambulance Fund or the Little Stone Church building fund.
Services will be held at the Little Stone Church in Chelan on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 at 1 p.m.
Graveside Services and Interment will follow at the Mansfield Cemetery at 3 p.m.
