Clarabell Lansing was a Chief flight attendant for Aloha Airlines. On April 28, 1988, Lansing was working Aloha Flight 243 from Hilo, Hawaii, to Honolulu when soon after takeoff the aircraft suffered an explosive decompression and lost approximately 1/3 of its roof. When the decompression occurred, Lansing was reportedly standing at row 5. According to passenger observations, Lansing was immediately swept out of the cabin through a hole in the left side of the fuselage at 24,000 feet altitude. She was the only fatality. Her body was never recovered.
In 1996 the Lansing Memorial Garden was inaugurated at Honolulu International Airport's Interisland Terminal.
The story of the incident was the subject of a movie "Miracle Landing."
