Professional golfer. The son of a professional golfer, he began his own career at the age of nineteen before earning a spot on the PGA tour in 1960. During his PGA career he won three tournaments including the 1965 PGA Championship. That same year he was named the association's Player of the Year. After his golfing career he became a successful commentator for ABC sports and designed golf courses. His many honors included being elected to the National Collegiate Hall of Fame (1977), the Texas Golf Hall of Fame (1978) and being involved in the Ryder Cup as a player in 1965 and a captain in 1981. He died in his hometown of Houston, Texas after a long bout with cancer. After his death the beloved golfer was cremated and family members scattered his ashes at the two British golf courses where he participated in the Ryder Cup and at the 18th hole of the Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, the site of his 1965 PGA Championship tournament win.
