Tommy was a very sweet furbaby, different from any other cat I have ever had, with regard to his shyness (for which I tended to call him SCHÄFCHEN rather than use his name, Schäfchen being German, this means little lamb).

He was a very tender cat, however, while we could cuddle him, he would only jump onto my Dad's lap, cuddle up there and sleep for a while, Dad was, after all, his real psychological parent, always being around and feeding him while he still could.

Tommy was a big boy, in his heaviest times, we weighed well over 1.25 stones, while in the last 1 1/2 years of his life, he dramatically lost almost half his weight and got weaker and weaker. His fur looked as if someone had put on a shirt 4 sizes bigger than needed. Our vet told us that it was worth a try to give him injections to strengthens his whole anatomy and vital functions, however, underlining that Tommy's hearbeat was unstable and that there was little chance to do anything.

On Aril 21, Tommy would head for our basement and deliberately hide under a huge storage rack, there was no getting him out of this hiding place, and he would neither eat nor drink.

On April 23, he finally came crawling out and looked at me with his eyes, looking so sad and helpless, as if asking me for mercy, and I took him and hurried to the vet.

After the examination, our vet told me that if this was her cat, she would save it from further agony, so I made the decision to have Tommy put down. He passed away peacefully in my arms, and I sat there for a while, crying and holding my sweet furbaby.

Because of Dad's condition, I made the difficult choice to leave Tommy's remains with the vet to have him cremated instead of burying Tommy in our garden; instead, I went back home, telling Dad that Tommy was very unwell and that he had to stay with the vet who tried everything to save his life.

After a few weeks, I finally told Dad, when I knew that he was strong enough, that Tommy had peacefully slept away. Dad cried, but at least, he had got used to the idea that Tommy might not make it; if I had told him right after the euthanasia, Dad would have collapsed for sure.

I shall never forget my SCHÄFCHEN who will forever have his special place in my heart.
