Son of John and Mary Bittle. Mother's maiden name is unknown but is possibly Gathings. Served in the 12th Battalion (4th Squadron) Company A South Carolina Cavalry. The 10th and 12th Battalions were consolidated into the 4th Regiment (Rutledge's) South Carolina Cavalry in January 1863. He then served in Company A of this unit.
