April 4, 1957 - Sioux Rapids Bulletin Press - Matilda Augusta Steen was born in Gotenburg, Sweden, on May 24, 1857 and died March 24, 1957 at the age of 99 years and 10 months.
She was united in marriage to Andrew Anders Steen in 1879. Shortly after their marriage, they came to Odeboldt, Ia. Then in 1880 they came to Sioux Rapids. Four children were born to this union: Mrs L.S. Anderson, Chester, IA; C.A. Steen, Vista, CA; and the late H C Steen of Boxholm; and Wilmina, here at home.
Mr Steen passed away in 1928 and Mrs Steen lived with her son in Boxholm until his death. Since then she has been here in her own home. She was a member of the Lutheran church and in her earlier years was very active in Ladies Aid work.
Beside her two daughters and her son, she leaves to mourn three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was a very devoted mother and the needs of her family came first at all times.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 27 at the First Lutheran church with Pastor Shaw officiating. Burial was in Lone Tree cemetery with the Henry Funeral home in charge. Pall bearers were Eilet Torkelson, George Reng, Ralph Young, Arthur Refsland, Noah Hovick and Charles Gustafson. Music was furnished by Mrs. Carl Ness at the organ. Mr. and Mrs. Bendix Halverson sang "Abide With Me" and "Peace, Perfect Peace", accompanied by Mrs. Ness.
