Lona was the fourth of five children born to John Porter Bernard and Willie Mae (Brown) Bernard. She married William Pete Bradford on January 20, 1911 in Madison County, Alabama.
Her siblings were, Lenora (Harris, LeGard) (1888-1952), Bessie (Sanderson, Boberg) (1889-1965), John Birrel (1891-1969), and Dewey Jessie (1898-1980). John P. Bernard remarried and had two more daughters, Sadie and Agness Bernard.
