John was the last of 7 children born to John & Martha Ann Buffaloe Bernard. His father was born in France and his mother was born in Wake County, North Carolina. John and his siblings were born in Alabama.
John married Willie Mae Brown from Tennessee, on December 29, 1886 in Madison County, Alabama. They had 5 children, Lenora (Harris, LeGard), Bessie (Sanderson, Boberg), & John Birrel, born in Alabama, and Lona Mae (Bradford), & Dewey Jessie, born in Texas.
Willie died about 1900, approximately 2 years after their last child was born. Her death and burial were probably in the community of Handley Village, now a part of Fort Worth, Texas.
John married Nancy Newman in 1903 in Lincoln County, Tennessee and they had two daughters, Sadie and Agness.
John died in Rusk, Cherokee Co, Texas.
