He enlisted at age 16 as a private in Co. B. 20th North Carolina Inf. He was wounded June 27, 1862 at Gaines Mill, VA, and returned to duty about Nov. 30. He was wounded again on May 3, 1863 at Chancellorsville, and returned to duty about Sept. 30. He was promoted to sergeant on Dec. 1, 1863. He transfered from Co. B. to Co. K. on March 15, 1864, and at that time was promoted to lieutenant 2nd class. He was wounded and taken prisoner at Monocacy, MD on July 9, 1864 and died of his wounds at Frederick, MD the following month.
