She was the daughter of Colonel George Warren Dresser (1837-1883) and Susan Fish LeRoy Dresseer (1834-1883). After the death of her parents, she and her siblings were raised in Newport, Rhode Island by their maternal grandparents, Daniel LeRoy and Susan Elizabeth Fish LeRoy.
At her death, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser Vanderbilt Gerry, was reputed to be one of the wealthiest women in Rhode Island. She was a direct descendant of Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch colonial governor of New York. In 1898, she married George Washington Vanderbilt, the youngest son of William K. Vanderbilt, in Paris, France. In 1914, when her husband died after developing 100,000 acres of real estate at Biltmore near Asheville, North Carolina, she and her daughter were the heirs to his $50 million estate. In October 1925, she married Senator Peter G. Gerry of Rhode Island in London, England. She was a notable hostess in the District of Columbia and in 1927, she became the President of the Congressional Club. Members of the club were the spouses of members of Congress. Senator Gerry retired in 1947. When he died in 1957, she was the majority heir to his estate. Survivors included a daughter, Mrs. Vivian Frances Bulkeley-Johnson of London; two grandsons, George V. Cecil of Biltmore, North Carolina and William Cecil, Vice President of the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York and two sisters, the Vicomtesse Suzanne D’Osmoy and Mrs. George Grenville Merrill, both of Newport, Rhode Island.
