Hall of Fame College Basketball Coach. A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, he is considered by many as being one of the greatest coaches and teachers in the game of basketball's history. Known for his exceptional defense-oriented teams, Newell guided the University of San Francisco to the NIT Championship Title in 1949 and the University of California to the NCAA Championship Title in 1959. He was named National Coach of the Year in 1960. Another major achievement during his coaching career included his guiding of the 1960 United States Olympic Men's Basketball Team (which included star players Oscar Robertson, Walt Bellamy, Jerry West, Jerry Lucas and Adrian Smith) to the gold medal. In addition to the Universities of San Francisco and Califorina, he coached at Michigan State. Newell was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor in 1979.
