Memorial. This monument, dedicated on July 18, 1998, honors the African American soldiers who fought in the United States Colored Troop regiments during the Civil War. Encircled on three sides by a Wall of Honor, the monument features sculpted bronze images of three uniformed soldiers and a sailor. The back of the monument depicts a family seeing their son off to war. The memorial stands nearly ten feet tall and was erected at the center of a granite paved plaza near the entrance to a metro train station at 10th and "U" Streets in the historic Shaw neighborhood of Washington D.C. It was unveiled to the public preceding the opening of the nearby African American Civil War Museum. 209,145 names, including over 7000 white officers are engraved on the Wall of Honor. The names include those who perished during the war with special notations and are listed alphabetically on 166 plaques arranged according to the regiment in which they served. The creation of the monument began in 1992 as a Bill in Congress that was passed to fund the project. It was designed by Louisville, Kentucky sculptor Ed Hamilton and directed by the African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation and Museum. (bio by: K Guy)
