The 3rd Kentucky Cavalry was organized at Calhoun, Kentucky and McLean County, Kentucky and mustered in for a three year enlistment on December 13, 1861 under the command of Colonel James Streshly Jackson.

The regiment was attached to 5th Division, Army of the Ohio, to June 1862. Cavalry Brigade, Army of the Ohio, to September 1862. 1st Brigade, Cavalry Division, Army of the Ohio, to November 1862. 1st Brigade, Cavalry Division, Army of the Cumberland, to January 1863. 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Army of the Cumberland, to March 1863. District of Western Kentucky, Department of the Ohio, to June 1863. 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, XXIII Corps, Department of the Ohio, to August 1863. Unattached, Hopkinsville, Kentucky, 1st Division, XXIII Corps, to October 1863. District of South Central Kentucky, 1st Division, XXIII Corps, to November 1863. District of Nashville, Tennessee, Department of the Cumberland, to April 1864. 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to October 1864. 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, Military Division of Mississippi, to July 1865.

The 3 KY CAV participited in the Battle of Shiloh, Siege of Corinth, Battle of Perryville, Battle of Stones River, Atlanta Campaign, Battle of Resaca, Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Siege of Atlanta, Battle of Jonesboro, Sherman's March to the Sea, Carolinas Campaign, Battle of Bentonville. The 3rd Kentucky Cavalry mustered out of service on July 15, 1865.

Capt. William W. Weatherholt, is the second son of a family of four boys and two girls, his birth occurring in this county February 4, 1834. His parents were William and Sarah (Wagoner) Weatherholt, both natives of Breckinridge County, KY. The father was an exceptional man, being singularly upright and kind. He came to this county soon after his marriage. At the time of his death July 26, 1849, he owned a fine farm of 210 acres. His age was fifty-nine. The mother died August 26, 1845, aged fifty. Both were consistent Christian people. Our subject remained at home until the death of his parents. For several years thereafter, he worked at various jobs. In October, 1861, he enlisted in Company G, Third Kentucky Cavalry, as second lieutenant. He served with distinction and was promoted first lieutenant, and finally, July 14, 1865, was bevetted captain by the Governor of Kentucky. He was honorably discharged in August, 1865, having been during his term of service in several engagements. October 29, 1865, he married Amanda Cockrell, daughter of Casper Cockrell, and four children are the fruit of this union: Eli H., Charles H., David H., and Elmer T. He farmed three years on rented land in Kentucky. Then returned and bought 50 acres in 1876, on Section 22. In 1884 he bought 109 acres, and his wife received by in heritance, 78 acres. This provides a comfortable farm and home. He is a Mason, and he and his wife are Methodists and excellent people.

William Waggoner Weatherholt died April 28, 1914, at the home of his son, David, near Owensboro, Kentucky, where he had spent his last three years. He and his wife are both buried in the Cockrell Cemetery, just north of the Tobinsport Methodist Church Cemetery. His impressive home is still standing across from the church and cemetery.
