First Sergeant, Company M, 7th US Cavalry, during the 1876 Battle of the Little Big Horn. Survived the Battle.

The son of Edward and Hannora Lynch Ryan of Tipperary, Ireland, he was born shortly after they immigrated from Ireland to Massachusetts. Trained as a carpenter, he enlisted 13 Dec 1861 in Company C, 28th Massachusetts Infantry. Reenlisted 30 Jan 1865 in Company K, 61st Mass. Infantry. Wounded 3 times during the Civil War. Enlisted 23 Nov 1866 in Company M, 7th US Cavalry. Appointed Corporal 23 Nov 1866 and Sergeant 27 Nov 1868. In the 1873 Yellowstone Expedition and the 1874 Black Hills Expedition. Appointed First Sgt in 1874. Court-martialed in April 1876 for mistreatment of a Private (hung him by his wrists as punishment for wrong-doing; the Private had cut a harness from a horse rather than remove it) and reduced to Private. Reappointed First Sgt May 1876 one week later. During the Battle of the Little Big Horn, he fought as part of Reno's Battalion, and survived the Battle. Discharged 21 Dec 1876, and returned to West Newton, Mass. where he became a police officer. Promoted up the police ranks to Captain in 1903. Married Mary Jane O'Donnell on 13 Oct 1881; they had 3 girls and a boy. Retired from Police on 21 Jan 1913. Died 14 Oct 1926 at his home; cause of death was myocarditis and arteriosclerosis.
