He returned to Tishomingo County and was elected to the state House in 1869. He introduced legislation that year that created Alcorn and Prentiss Counties out of Tishomingo, then served as representative for Prentiss County until 1879, when he retired to Meridian. He was elected to represent voters in the Meridian area from 1889-1910, and served as speaker of the House from 1873-1878, 1892-1894 and 1908-1910.
Street died in Meridian on May 31, 1920, and is buried in Booneville Cemetery in Prentiss County.
