BOCA RATON — A Florida Atlantic University freshman died Sunday of an apparent drug overdose, officials said this morning.
The 18-year-old student and her friend, who did not attend FAU, were found dead in a suite at the Heritage Park Towers residence hall around 3:30 p.m., by another student, said Deputy Police Chief Keith Totten. Their deaths are under investigation, Totten said.
Friends of the student identified her as Nikki Phillips of Weston, CT.
They said she spent Saturday night in her dorm room hanging out with a male friend who had recently moved here from Tampa and worked as a roofer. Her roommate reportedly went into their suite around 8 a.m., and heard them snoring. When she returned later that afternoon, they were still in bed and not responsive, friends said.
"She was someone you wanted to get to know," said Megan Manary, 19. FAU President Frank Brogan said counseling has been made available to students and staff.
"Our hearts and thoughts go out to the friends and families of both of these young people," Brogan said.
Brogan said he spent several hours in the residence hall Sunday night. "I spoke with the family of the deceased and returned home several hours later," he said, taking a long pause as his eyes welled with tears. "I hugged my own boy just a little tighter than I ever have."
