Peter was a son of John Hegeman [sometimes spelled Hagerman, among other things] (1796-1859) and Eve Johnson (1795-1854). He was raised in the vicinity of Gloversville, New York, and learned the making of gloves, purses and other soft-leather goods.
He married Catherine Allen 17 March 1842 at Perth, Fulton County, New York. They had eight children in the ensuing years, while living in several different places in Fulton County, New York:
Peter Johnson Jr.
John Adrian Allen
About 1864 Peter moved the family west to Sparta, Monroe County, Wisconsin, where he and his sons pursued the glove-making business. After about 14 years there, they packed up half the town -- at least the parts belonging to the Hendricks, Hegeman, Palmer and a few other clans -- and followed their young men west to Dakota Territory, where they homesteaded, taking advantage of the 1864 law to get almost-free land. For awhile they all farmed in order to perfect their patents, but soon Peter's family resumed the glove-making business.
Peter died just a bit less than five months after his wife of fifty years.
