US Congressman, Minister to Venezuela. He was the father of John Lockwood Wilson who was also a US Congressman and a US Senator. James was an 1842 graduate of Wabash College. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1842. His law practice in Crawfordsville was interrupted by his service in the Mexican-American War from June of 1846 to June of 1847. He was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses. During the Civil War he was appointed captain of Volunteers in November of 1862 and honorably discharged as a brevet lieutenant colonel in December of 1865. After the war he was appointed as Minister of Venezuela from 1866 until his death.
