He graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1962. He was united in marriage to Glenda L. Taylor-Funk on December 16, 1978. His favorite pastimes were spending time with his family, especially those special moments with his children and grandchildren, hunting, fishing, and playing cards with family and friends.
He was a dispatcher for the Greene county Sherriff's department under Mickey Owen. Then, he served as the night foreman at the Southwest Regional Stockyards for 22 years. He was also a longtime member of Hamlin Memorial Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Bessie. Gary is survived by his loving wife, Glenda; daughter, Susie Compton and husband, Lonnie of Springfield; son, Jeff Funk and wife, Lisa of Springfield; grandchildren, Matt and Brandon Compton, Zachary and Caleb Funk; brother, Ken Hickman and wife, Clara of Highlandville; sister, Beverly Sue Hultgren and husband, Ronnie of Springfield; father-in-law, Oren Taylor of Springfield; brother-in-law, Ron Taylor and Lisa of Springfield; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of special friends.
Services were held at Greenlawn Funeral Home North.
