John (Johann) was born in Erkeln, Westphalia, Prussia (modern-day Germany) to Franz Anton Boden and Anna Gertrud Backhaus.

John was married to Gertrude Theresia Luecke on Nov. 20, 1860, in St. Louis, Missouri, and they had nine children, four of whom survived to adulthood.

John was a grocer and feed merchant in St. Louis.

Johann's cousin Christina was also married to Gertrude's brother Wilhelm.
