Joseph was the son of Jonathan Columbus Bozarth & Leah (Stout) Bozarth. He was the 2nd of their 13 children, with 1 older sister (Mariam), 5 younger brothers (William, Albert, Samuel, Ira, and Jonathan) and 6 younger sisters (Cornelia, Cynthia, Isabell, Arabell, Nancy and Clarinda).
Joseph was born in McLean Co, Illinois and his family moved to Decatur County, Iowa prior to 1857. Though is parents left there prior to 1880, many of Joseph's siblings stayed there their entire lives and are buried there.
Joseph's brother William Wesley Bozarth also fought in the Civil War, and survived to live to the rip age of 64. Both of Joseph's parents survived into their 90's.
