Funeral services for Nancy Alwilda Harriss, age 82, of Bangs, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Davis-Morris Funeral Home with Aaron LeMond officiating. Interment will follow in the Bangs Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Miss Harriss died Sunday, March 2, 2008, in Brownwood.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Friday, Sept. 25, 1925, to William Bryan "Slim" and Maye Garms Harris, who were married Jan. 27, 1923. During baseball season, her pre-school days were spent traveling with her parents due to her father's professional baseball career. He was with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics from 1920 to 1926 when he was sold to the Boston Red Sox. In 1929 when Miss Harriss became of school age, her father was with the St. Paul, Minn., baseball team. Two of her school years were completed in St. Paul. Miss Harriss graduated from Bangs High School in 1942. She attended Howard Payne College where she graduated with a BBA Degree in 1946 and an ME Degree in 1954. Her teaching career began in the fall of 1946 at Bangs High School and ended there in 1984. Other than her traveling days, she always resided in the home her parents built in 1923. She was a member of the Bangs Church of Christ.
She is survived by special friends and former students who have done so much to take care of her; Libby Brooke of Bangs and June and Charles Winfrey of Bangs. She is survived by special cousins David and Judy Garms of Richardson, Robert and Margaret Garms of Bettendorf, Iowa, Dana Carr of Bethany, Okla., Jerrella and John Kein of Tulia, and other numerous cousins, friends and former students.
She was preceded in death by her parents, numerous aunts, uncles, and special cousins, Joann E. Harriss and Iris Stacy Cate.
