Corporal, 5e Régiment de genie de combat
(5 Combat Engineer Regiment) based at CFB Valcartier near Québec City. Aged 35, he was from the Québec City region. He was a combat engineer deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces serving in Afghanistan.
Cpl Martin Dubé was trying to defuse two roadside bombs hidden in a culvert when one of them exploded. An Afghan police officer was also killed and an interpreter was badly wounded. The incident occurred in the Panjwaii district, about 20 kilometres southwest of Kandahar city.
He was described as a skilled perfectionist who never let himself get down when things got rough. Comrades remembered him as someone who enjoyed life, was good at making others laugh, and was a great guy to be around. Cpl Dubé is survived by his mother Marie-Paule, father Roger, brother Vincent, girlfriend Julie Lebrasseur, and many other family members.
Military funeral held on Tuesday, June 24, 2009 at Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc Chapel, located on the Valcartier Garrison, Québec. Burial of cremated remains to take place at a later date.
There have been 120 Canadian military fatalities since the start of the Afghanistan conflict in 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.
