A pre-med major, he was accepted by Tulane's medical school, but he decided to play professional football first. In a career that lasted three years, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears, then traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers and, finally, to the Calgary Stampeders in Canada. When the Army drafted him, he coached soldiers' football teams and persuaded officials to send him to umpire school. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to New Orleans to enter medical school. After graduation, he started a general practice in New Orleans but developed a specialty in anesthesia. He retired in the late 1990s after being Methodist Hospital's director of anesthesia for 30 years.
