He played college and professional football before embarking on a medical career that lasted nearly 40 years. He played high school football well enough to be recruited by Tulane University. Because this was the time of single-platoon football, he played offensive and defensive tackle. In addition to lettering all four years, he was chosen for the All Southeastern Conference first team from 1948 through 1950, and he was named an All-American in 1948, his sophomore year.
A pre-med major, he was accepted by Tulane's medical school, but he decided to play professional football first. In a career that lasted three years, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears, then traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers and, finally, to the Calgary Stampeders in Canada. When the Army drafted him, he coached soldiers' football teams and persuaded officials to send him to umpire school. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to New Orleans to enter medical school. After graduation, he started a general practice in New Orleans but developed a specialty in anesthesia. He retired in the late 1990s after being Methodist Hospital's director of anesthesia for 30 years.
