Silver, was the family horse owned by my Grandparents Frank & Vera Maassen, when they lived in Lewis Iowa.
When I was a child my Grandparents had a white horse at their farm Silver, he was an older horse. When my mom, 2 aunts, and uncle were kids Silver was their horse.
I was about 5 or 6 years old we had gone to church and it was a nice Sunday. For some reason we went to church in my cousin Larry's convertible. The top was down on the car and we drove slow as we drove on the gravel road the last 2 miles to the farm from the highway. I had remember my Grandfather talking the day before about how Silver was sick and I could not ride him.
We drove just past the house on the gravel road and turned left to go to sidewalk in front of house, and noticed something large and white laying on the lawn. My Grandma had said, "Look Frank its Silver on the Lawn." We stopped and everyone got out of car and I was told to wait by the car.
It was Silver and he was dead and my Grandpa put a blanket on him to cover his head and part of his body. I guess he went crazy and jumped the barbwire fence. On his belly were large scrape marks and blood. I remember the vet was called and came out to see what might have caused Silver to do this. Even though he was dead my Grandpa wanted to know because he had other animals on the property.
