Walter William Kastner was born on October 17, 1916. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1934, where he served as the Senior Class President and gained citywide renown as a basketball player. Walter went on to the University of Washington where he earned his varsity letter playing basketball for the legendary Coach "Hec" Edmundson. After injuring his knee, he turned his attention to boxing, and won the University's Light Heavyweight Championship. He graduated with a degree in Education in 1938, and taught for several years at Vancouver High School. During the Second World War, he served with great gallantry in the Army Air Force, as a navigator on B-24 and B-17 bombers in China-Burma-India Theater. He rose to the rank of Captain and won the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. After the war, he returned to the University and earned a degree in Civil Engineering. Around this time, he met and married the love of his life, Jean Follansbee, and began an eighteen-year career with Washington Asphalt Company, where he rose to become its president. He also served as the President of Stoneway Concrete in Renton before his retirement. Walt was an avid sportsman throughout his life. Always a lucky salmon fisherman, he won a car in the Seattle Times' 1946 salmon derby. He spent many happy days trolling for salmon off Jefferson Head, Point No Point, "the white house" and other hot spots in Puget Sound as well as in Tillamook, Oregon. He was also a gifted tennis and squash player. He was always one of the first on the tennis courts at the Seattle Tennis Club during his retirement. When he injured his right shoulder, he taught himself to play tennis left-handed. He was a member of the 101 Club, Washington Athletic Club, Seattle Yacht Club, Seattle Tennis Club, Broadmoor Golf Club, and Seattle Golf Club. He was also a member of Northlake Lutheran Church of Kenmore. He is survived by his loving wife Jean, sons Chuck and Walt, Jr., daughters-in-law, Mary and Laura, brother Henry, sister-in-law, Dorothy, and grandchildren Jeff, Wendy, Katie, Andrew, and Brian, and great granddaughter Shelby. Walter Kastner was an amazing man, who lived a long and rich life, and was much loved and admired by his family and friends. He faced the last years of his life with the same grace, dignity, and courage that typified the rest of his life. He died at home in the loving embrace of his family. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Walt's honor to the charity of your choice. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 2005 at the Acacia Funeral Home Chapel, with Interment to follow at Acacia Memorial Park. Friends may pay their respects on Friday from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
