Mrs. Emma DeHaas, aged 59, of Milesburg, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edna Swyers at Milesburg, at 9;30 o'clock Tuesday morning as an aftermath of an accident Sept 12, in which one of her daughters, Elizabeth DaHaas aged 32 was instantly killed and the other daughter, Mrs. Edna Swyers was injured. Mrs. DeHaas, who with her two daughters, was walking across the railroad bridge spanning Bald Eagle Creek at Milesburg, when a Penna. Railroad freight train backed across the bridge, leaped from the side of the bridge. Falling about six feet she kept from falling into the creek below by grasping a crossbar under the structure and hanging there until rescuers reached her. She sustained painful bruises and strains, and suffered greatly from shock. Since the time of the accident she had undergone treatment on two different occasions at the Centre County Hospital.
Her daughter, Elizabeth, was instantly killed when the train wheels passed over parts of her body. The other daughter, Mrs. Swyers, leaped off the bridge, landing on some large rocka on the edge of the stream. She was not seriously injured.
Mrs, DeHaas was a daughter of Benjamin and Pheobe Houdeshell, and was born at Greenwood on August 10 1878, making her age at the time of death 59years, 2 months and 9 days. In 1889 she was united in marriage with Daniel DeHaas, who passed away about eight years ago. Surviving in addition to daughter, Mrs. Swyers, with whom she made her home, are two sons; Miles DeHaas of Milesburg and Jospeh DeHaas of Centre Hall and four brothers and two sisters namely; Jacob Houdeshell, Mrs. Nora Blake and Mrs. Fannie Vinton, all of Phillipsburg; John and Frank Houdeshell of Howard, and George Houdeshell of Clearfield.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this Thursday afternoon from Swyers residence in Milesburg, in charge of the Rev. J Franklin Lint. Interment will be made at the Trczlyulny cemetery Milesburg. Mrs DeHaas was a member of the Pilgrim Holiness church.
