Birth: 1759, Ireland
Death: Aug. 21, 1824
Washington County
Pennsylvania, USA

Elizabeth Gilmore, a Revolutionary heroine, followed the fortunes of Washington's army for seven years, nursing the sick and wounded and even shouldering a rifle in times of need.

Elizabeth came to America in 1776 from Ireland. Inspired by the revolutionary cause, she and her sister Anne enlisted as nurses in the Continental Army. Both served at Valley Forge during the long, hard winter of 1777-78 where Elizabeth met John Berry. For four years after the war, Elizabeth was engaged as a ranger, carrying her rifle and serving as a scout. She married Berry in 1787 and settled in Hickory. Her pay records, preserved in the Pennsylvania Archives, title her as "Ranger of the Frontier" and she is credited with fighting in several battles.
