HOWARD D. LAIRD NORTH KINGSVILLE Howard Duane Laird, 76, died peacefully at home in North Kingsville, on Saturday, April 3, 2004, after a long battle with prostate cancer.Beloved husband of Joan Walrath Laird; loving father of Pamela S. Laird of Occidental, CA, Stephanie J. Wong of Portland, OR, and Ned W. (Chip) Laird of Boise, ID; and dedicated grandfather of Rachel and Jessica Wong, and Emma and Graham Laird. He is also survived by his stepmother, Catherine Anne (Nan) Stearns Laird of Monroeville, OH; and brothers, William Scott of Lyndhurst, OH, John Scott of Frankfurt, IN, and Henry James of Clyde, OH, all formerly of Conneaut.Duane was born in Conneaut, OH, on January 3, 1928, and graduated from Conneaut High School in 1946. He served in the Air Force from 1946-48, including at Air Force Headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany, during the Berlin Airlift. He played baseball with the Monroe Athletic Club for 16 years.Duane made his career with the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, where he advanced from operations to industrial engineering, and finally to labor relations. He was the Manager of Labor Relations in Greenville, PA, prior to his retirement in 1983, after 34 years of service. In retirement, he operated a framing business in conjunction with the Pine Needle Craft Studio, a Greenville business created by his wife, Joan.During the 30 years he lived in Greenville, he was a member of Greenville First Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at Greenville Hospital, a director of the Bessemer Federal Credit Union, and an Elk. He was an ordained elder of the North Kingsville Presbyterian Church, and an avid golfer and member of Village Green Golf Course.Duane will long be remembered for his positive spirit, generous nature, welcoming smile and joyful sense of humor, even in the most difficult of circumstances.A Memorial Service will be held at the North Kingsville Presbyterian Church, located at Church and Maple Streets, on Friday, April 16, 2004, at 11 a.m.Immediately following the service will be a luncheon in his honor at the Church Fellowship Hall, where the family will greet guests. No other calling hours will be observed.In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the North Kingsville Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 299, North Kingsville, OH 44068, or to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401.Envelopes will be available at the Church and at MARCY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, where arrangements have been handled
