Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. Born in Austintown, Ohio, he was admitted to the Indiana State Bar Association in 1861, but then enlisted in the Union Army as a Private in the 48th Indiana Volunteer Infantry at the start of the Civil War. He was later promoted first to Captain in the 48th Indiana, then as Colonel and commander of the 128th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services". After the war, he was elected as a Republican to represent Indiana's 11th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1869 to 1875.
