Lawrence James:"Haunce" McEntaffer, 93, of Clarinda died peacefully at Goldenrod Manor on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.

Lawrence was born in Clarinda, Iowa, on August 4, 1919, the first of two sons, to Mark Hann McEntaffer and Debra (Willits) McEntaffer. Haunce graduated from Clarinda High School and then from Southwest Iowa Community College. After serving for nearly three years with the United States Army in the South Pacific and Philippines, he married Blanche Edwards in Troy, Kansas on May 14, 1945 during a 45 day furlough. Upon discharge from the service, Haunce returned to Clarinda, Iowa where he and Blanche lived the remainder of their lives. Haunce, better known as "Shorty" to his friends and customers, worked as a delivery driver for Butternut Bread from the time of his Army discharge to his retirement.

Haunce was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion for 61 years and had been a member of the Nodaway Masonic Lodge #140 AF & AM. Haunce was an avid sports fan; especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and he enjoyed coaching Clarinda little league baseball. He bowled for many years and enjoyed going to the casino and the dog races. His family was very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Haunce was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 53 years, Blanche McEntaffer; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Haunce is survived by his son James "Jim" McEntaffer and wife Elaine of Atlantic, Iowa; five grandchildren, Glenna Luin of Atlantic, Chuck Luin (Ali) of Olathe, Kansas, Ann Brownsberger (Scott) of North Liberty, Iowa, Jon McEntaffer (Jennifer) of Atlantic, Iowa and Mitch Strong of Mission, Kansas; eleven great grandchildren; brother Bill McEntaffer (Corkie) of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces; nephews and many friends.
