Samuel McKinstry was born and died in Orange County, New York, near the town of Montgomery. He was the son of Stephen & Sarah (Smith) McKinstry. He is believed to have had two wives, the first, perhaps named Phebe Luquer, who died childless. His second wife was a young widow, Catherine (Felton) Mould. They had five children: Christopher Mould, Sarah, Jacob, Esther Felton and Caroline.

Samuel was a veteran of the War of 1812. According to his application for bounty land filed in 1855, he was a private in the company commanded by Capt. Samuel Webb in Brigadier General Joseph Swartout's brigade in the militia regiment commanded by Col. Benjamin Woodward. Unlike many military pensioners Samuel still had his military discharge papers which no doubt facilitated approval of his claim.
