Trey Alan Kurtz was born on September 20, 1994 in Houston, Texas to Alan W. Kurtz of Houston, Texas and Cathy Varnau Kurtz of Houston, Texas.
Trey passed away October 30th, 2014 at the age of 20. Trey was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Earl and Elizabeth Kurtz of Sugarland, Texas; his maternal grandfather, Wilbur Varnau of Arizona.
Trey is survived by his father Alan W. Kurtz and mother Cathy Varnau Kurtz; one brother, Mason Kurtz and one sister Miranda Makdisi, all from Houston, Texas; Grandmother Mary Varnau; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Trey attended Westside High school in Houston. He was an avid lover of sports and collected brightly colored sneakers to show his athleticism and bright smile. He was also a state champion wrestler at the age of 9 and an accomplished baseball player. More recently, Trey enjoyed all things fitness, which included working out with his father and eating healthy. Saying "I love you" to family came easy to Trey and he seldom missed an opportunity to share his infectious smile. He had a positive view of life and his friends often admired him for this quality.
It was also this incredible heart that drove Trey to victory over a four year battle with chronic epilepsy. His vivacious spirit through numerous surgeries and medical treatments carried him to the ultimate success of living a seizure-free life. This fall was Trey's first semester at Blinn College, where he lived on his own, met new friends, and basked in the simple happiness of being a normal college student.
The outgoing sweetness of his personality will be remembered by strangers and cherished by those closest to him. He was the kind of young man that people would be proud to call a son, a brother, and a friend.
A Celebration of Trey's Life will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, located at 13001 Katy Freeway in Houston, Texas, 77079. Trey was endlessly kind, giving, and loving to others, and in honor of that quality and in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to further epilepsy research in hopes of helping everyone win the battle against seizures. Those donations may be directed to UTHealth Medical School at Houston, The Tandon Research Fund for Epilepsy Office of Development, PO Box 1321, Houston, TX 77251-1321.
Trey blazed the trail of success against epilepsy and he would want others to follow that path of joy.
