Obituary from the Alexandra Argus, April 1 1943.

"Clara Etta Riddle was born Jan. 14 1893 in Jefferson county Nebraska. She was the youngest child of Ferdinand and Clara Riddle. She passed away in the Blue Valley hopital, Hebron. Tuesday, March 23 1943, at the age of 50 years, 2 months and 9 days. Death came after a long illness caused by a stroke nearly nine years ago. She lived in the Hubbell and Reynolds communities most of her life. Clara Riddle was united in marriage to Charles Shoup on Jan. 14 1912. [19th birthday] To them were born seven children-five daughters and two sons. She leaves to mourn her loss, five daughters and one son: Nelma Slavik of Alexandria, Hazel Curry of Fairbury, Pvt. Leslie of Camp Hood, Texas, JoAnn and Esther who are still at home; [name of one daughter missing, Evelyn Jones of Fairbury] four brothers and two sisters, namely: Harold of Reynolds Nebr.; Roy of Evans Colo.; William of Viola Ore.; Sydney of Bartlett Nebr.; Mary of Hastings, Nebr.; and Nellie of Reynolds; and many other relatives and friends. She has one granddaughter and five grandsons. Her husband, one son, father and mother and two brothers precede her in death. Mrs. Shoup's mother passed away when she was only two weeks old. She was raised to girlhood by her father, sisters and brothers. When a young lady her father passed away, leaving her to keep house for her youngest brother Harold. They lived together until she was married. She was a kind and loving sister, wife and mother; always a hard worker until her illness. But as soon as she was able to do anything again she did her best to take care of the two little girls after the rest were married. She wanted her older married children to have their own homes, so she and the two girls lived together. Her first thoughts were always of her family. She was pleasant, joyful and had a likeable personality. Many people, far and nearby speak well of her yet today. We all hate to give up our mother. But we know that she is resting in peace, the first time for so many years. That helps to make it not so hard to part with our kind, sweet and lovable mother. Mother, we'll miss you, but we're glad you are resting. Our thoughts will always be filled with your kind sweet ways. May God bless you. Goodbye Mother, until we meet you over there.-your children. Funeral services were conducted at the Reynolds Methodist church, with Rev. Jas. C. Henrikson, pastor of the Alexandria Presbyterian church officiating, and interment made in the Reynolds cemetary, last Friday afternoon."
