Sandy was born a daughter of Andrew and Janet (Alexander) Black. Sandy passed on at her home after a five year courageous battle with ALS.
Sandy was extremely hard working, a very good mother and dedicated wife. She was lots of fun, loved people and was a very strong-hearted lady.
She fought for five years with ALS and tried to get along with her life as though it did not exist. She loved her children, the beach, and her dogs "Daggett" and "Maggie." She worked as a certified nurses' aide for many years. She loved her patients and work very much. Because of her illness she had to leave her patients but remained in the health care profession till her illness forced her retirement.
She is survived by her husband, Kevin Cassidy of Durham; her son, Jonathan Back of Durham; her daughter, Cortney Back of Durham; stepchildren, Cole Cassidy and Sommer Cassidy, both of Durham; her mother, Janet Black of Bath; her brother, Rick Black of Woolwich; two sisters, Dawn Cobb of Harpswell and Cheryl Konz of Michigan; aunt and uncle, David and Sarah Sparks of Harpswell; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association Maine Chapter for medical research, or to Brunswick Hospice.
