Joseph A. (Alex) McVey, 70, of Sophia died Tuesday in a Beckley Hospital after a short illness.

He was a member of the United Mine Workers, Local 5771, of Stotesbury, Beckley Coin Club, sophia Lions Club, and the Sophia United Methodist Men.

Mr. McVey attended the Sophia United Methodist church and was a retired employee of Eastern Associated Corp. with 40 years of service.

Born in Sullivan, May 24, 1911, he was a son of the late Silas J. and Lucretia Hutchinson McVey.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen (Helen) Massey McVey; five daughters, Mrs. James (Kitty) Pennington and Mrs. Pat (Mary) Johnson, both of Clinton, MD., Mrs. Don (Jean) Frohock of Dale, Texas, Mrs. raymond (Laura) dreyer of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Terry (Susan) Weese of Shady Spring; two brothers, H.H. McVey of Sophia and W.W. McVey of Crab Orchard; 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the Williams - Blue Ridge Funeral Home chapel in Sophia with the Revs. R.C. Browning and Robert Henson officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Friends may call today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Mickey warden, Geno Placidi, eddie Blevins, Carl Neff, lionel Travis, Oather Rushbrook, and J.A. Staton.
