Bred by E. P. Taylor at his Windfields Farm, U.S. divison, El Gran Senior was purchased by England's Robert Sangster for whom he won England's 2000 Guineas Stakes and the Irish Derby in 1984. Retired from racing, El Gran Senior stood at stud at his birthplace in 1985 then was sent to Ashford Stud where he remained until his death in 2006.
