John Mathews Hickey was born in Cocke County, Tennessee to Joseph Day Hickey and Sarah A. Mathews. He lost his leg in the civil war and after the war became an attorney. He was instrumental in getting the Confederate Monument placed in Arlington Cemetery, and sat on the podium with President Wilson during the first ceremony there. He and his wife, Eva Francis Baird, had no children. Francis was a past president of the Daughters of the Confederacy in the District of Columbia. He was a war hero and a southern gentleman. He is buried in the confederate section in Arlington, at the base of the Confederate Monument.
