William (Bill) Lund, Jr., 82, of Prairie du Chien, and formerly of Barnum, passed away Saturday, May 17, at the Prairie du Chien Hospice Center.

He was born October 8, 1925, in Crawford County, son of William B. and Gladys (Snodgrass) Lund.

He attended grade school at the Barnum State Graded School and graduated from Gays Mills High School in 1943. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mary Groom on June 9, 1948, in Elkader, Iowa.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served his country during World War II from 1943 - 1946 as a radio operator aboard the U.S.S. LCS 105. He attended basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago, Ill., and was stationed in the South Pacific during his tour of duty.

After service, he worked at the Borden Dairy Plant in Boscobel for several years and then farmed until he retired. He also drove school bus for the North Crawford District from 1976 until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Steuben and the McCormick Rose Legion Post 308 of Gays Mills. He also served as clerk for the Town of Haney for 12 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, telling fish stories, card playing, and treasured spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; five sons, Greg (Mary Jane) of Boscobel, Glen of Soldiers Grove, Ed (Maggie) of Gays Mills, Randy of Gays Mills and Joe (Bernice) of Soldiers Grove; a daughter-in-law, Donna Lund of Prairie du Chien; two sisters, Lola (Ray) Childs of Marquette, Iowa, and Tanda Featherston of Prairie du Chien; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relaives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gene; a brother, Clyde; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy; and a brother-in-law, John Atkinson.

Visitation will be at the Dommersnaes-Bertram Family Funeral Home in Gays Mills on Tuesday, May 20, from 5-8:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Graveside services will be held immediately following at the Haney Ridge Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by McCormick Rose Legion Post 308 of Gays Mills.
