Jan, 1998 - I thought the day would NEVER come! Sophie was a Puppy Mill rescue; had finally weaned the litter she was nursing when the mill was raided. Now it was time to pick her up from our vet who had boarded mom & babies (pups had new forever homes, too). I don't know who needed who the most. I knew my Charmie's health was failing and our years together were closing in. Animal control had just brought in the breeders and babies from the mill to our vet's office, and they thought of us for Sophie. (We named her Sophie, but it evolved into "So-So" somewhere along the line:) Those Eskies (American Eskimo) just call to me. I was 8yo when I loved my first fluffy white teflon-coated beauty. (Honest, dirt and doggie odor do not stick.) He just appeared on our front porch one night. I've been accused of being a Pied Piper for lots of critters, but this one came on its own! I named him Bumper. Where do kids get names.
When Charmin and Sophie first met it was magic. There was young Sophie (3yo) immediately acknowledging the wise elder (Charmie was over 14). Charmie took the youngin under her paw and helped her learn. Things like... it was okay to be picked up. She didn't have to be afraid to be rubbed and petted and hugged. It was okay to go from room to room, check things out! Charmin came to us to be petted in Sophie's presence, turned and looked at Sophie as if to say, "Its good... c'mon, try it." It wasn't long before Missy So-So held her feathery donut tail high, and let us know that... ummm... she really did like ice in her water, pleeeeze:)
Sophie didn't have the genetics to live over 10 years. She had issues common w/in-breeding, and certainly a poor start in life, misuse/abuse her first 3yrs. But she grew in confidence and learned we were okay. She was a happy, SWEEEET little girl. Her health held strong for about 5yrs. We loved her, and she loved us, and her critter family, too.
The 2 sistah kitties acquired Sophie's liking for ice in their water, which they're treated to daily. It's a sing-song thing. I know Sophie So-So hears it!

"Animals never belong to us, they pass through our lives on journeys of their own. They ask no more of us than that we love them and let them go on in dignity and peace. Animals come and go with lessons to learn and lessons to teach. So, we love them and learn. We accept the pain of their going as we received the joy of their coming. All of it is a blessing." ~Shirley Thayer
Thank you, sniksnak, for Sophie's sponsorship! :)
