Lynn G. Sample, 70, of Columbus, Indiana, died Friday, May 1, 2009 at Oaklawn Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

He was born October 14, 1938, in Switzerland County, the son of Robert J. and Harriet Mae Shaw Sample. He was a 1956 graduate of Vevay High School and a graduate of Indiana Central Business College.

He retired in December 2000 after 42 years with General Electric/Wellman Company in Shelbyville, Indiana, where he was Vice President of Finance. He currently served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Captain's Harbor Condominium Association, Bokeelia, Florida.

Lynn served with the U.S. Army from October 1961 to October 1963 and was stationed at Fort Hood in Temple, Texas.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus, was an avid fisherman and gardener and excelled at woodworking. He was also a model train enthusiast and built and maintained a large outdoor layout complete with tunnels, bridges and multiple trains.

He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Sherley and Rose Mary Sample of Louisville, Kentucky, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death on May 19, 2008, by his wife, Mary Ann Aldred Sample, whom he married September 10, 1960, his parents and one brother, Jerry R. Sample.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday May 4, 2009 at Myers-Reed Chapel at 3729 25th Street in Columbus. Burial will follow at 3:30 PM at the Cemetery in Vevay.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday, May 3, 2009 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Monday, May 4, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society or the First United Methodist Church in Columbus.
