Luther was born in Illinois to Henry Harrison Sprague and Catherine Kirkpatrick. The family moved to Memphis, MO (Scotland County, Northeastern Missouri) when he was a young boy. He served with at least one brother, William Truman Sprague, and his father, Henry Harrison Sprague, in Company A of the 2nd Regiment Cavalry, Missouri State Militia (US). After the war he married Hannah Mary Watson (born in 1851 in Pennsyvania) in Bourbon County, KS (July 30, 1871). He later worked in Denver and then in Nebraska before the family moved together to Harlan County, NE. A younger brother, Henry also settled in Nebraska. His parents and brother William Truman Sprague moved to Johnson County after the war. His mother returned to Memphis, MO after her husband died in 1879. Luther & Mary had the following children: Myrtle Monte Sprague (Freeman) 1886-1924, Jess Sprague (1872?-1945), Elmo Sprague (1883-?) and Roy Sprague (1880-1965). Following Luther's death in 1897 Mary raised the family alone and was a telephone operator in Huntley, Nebraska until her death in 1930.
