John Le Mesurier
Birth: Apr. 5, 1912
Bedfordshire, England
Death: Nov. 15, 1983
Kent, England

Character actor. WWII veteran. BAFTA award winner in 1971 for Best Actor of the Year for his performance in "Traitor" as as a defector, based on Kim Philby, living in a state of drunken reverie in Moscow. His movie credits were extensive. Yet, his most famous role arguably is the mild-mannered, aristocratic Sgt. Wilson in the British comedy series, Dad's Army, which ran from 1968 to 1977. Just before his death at age 71, he asked that his wife post this death notice in the newspaper: "John Le Mesurier wishes it to be known that he conked out on November 15th. He sadly misses his family and friends." His autobiography titled A JOBBING ACTOR was published posthumously.
