Target was a German Shepard who was trained as a bomb sniffing dog to aid soilders in Afganistan. She helped sniff out a suicide bomber along with two other dogs as he broke into the barracks of soilders. The dogs were credited with saving the lives of the soilders in the unit. After her "tour of duty" was finished, Target was taken home to Arizona with Sgt. Terry Young, an Army National Guard member. One night Target escaped from her yard and picked up as a stray and brought to the Pinal County Animal Care and Control Shelter in Case Grande.
A shelter worker mistakenly took Target out of her cage and she was killed by euthinization. Sgt. Young had arrived later that day and found out Target's fate.
'My four-year-old son just can't understand what is going on with Target and keeps asking me to get the poison out of her and bring her home. They don't want her to go be with God yet,' a teary Sgt Young told the local CBS TV station.
